Physiotherapy and Chiropractic Solutions for Disc Herniations

What is a Herniated Disc?

Disc herniation occurs when the soft gel-like centre of our intervertebral discs that stack to make the spine bulge outwards and tear through the outer layer resulting in pain, numbness and weakness, often felt down the arms or legs. Furthermore, affecting walking ability, grip strength and other important functions. This injury can occur anywhere in the spine but is most often occuring in the lower back.

What can cause this to happen?

Disc herniations are gradual and can be age related as we get older the discs become less flexible and can become more prone to rupturing with minor movements.

How can we manage this condition?
Physiotherapy and chiropractic care can help manage disc herniations, offering treatment options specifically tailored to the patient which will help decrease symptoms and improve function. Our therapists will implement various pain creating strategies and plans including but not limited to:

  • Core stabilization exercises: Strengthening the muscles of the core which surround the spine can result in enhanced support and stability, leading to reduced pressure on our spinal discs and help patients get back to doing their daily tasks pain free!

  • Functional rehabilitation: Therapists aim to restore mobility, strength and flexibility while addressing specific functional limitations caused by disc herniation. This is done by incorporating targeted exercises and movement patterns which will assist in overall functionality and reduce pain.

  • Self directed exercise: Therapists are trained to teach exercises focusing on promoting proper spinal alignment, reducing nerve compression and improving mobility. By teaching patients different pain alleviating exercises this will help them take an active role in managing their condition.
