Cupping Therapy

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing practice that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. Traditionally, glass or bamboo cups were used, but nowadays, practitioners use cups made of silicone or plastic. The suction created by the cups helps to mobilize blood flow, promote healing, and relieve muscle tension.

During a cupping session, the cups are placed on specific areas of the body, usually the back, shoulders, or limbs. The suction created by the cups draws the skin and underlying tissues into the cups, resulting in increased blood flow to the area. This suction also helps to release muscle tension and stimulate the lymphatic system.

How We Treat At Sahara Health

We are manual therapy providers.

At Sahara Health we use cupping therapy as a secondary treatment option or a “tool in the tool-kit”. Since all of our practitioners are trained in the use of cupping therapy, you may receive this therapy as part of your chiropractic care, physiotherapy or massage therapy treatment plan.

Static cupping and dynamic cupping are two different techniques used in cupping therapy:

In static cupping, cups are placed on specific areas of the body and left in position for a set duration, creating suction and promoting blood flow and muscle relaxation.

Dynamic cupping involves moving the cups along the skin, often using massage oil or lubricant, to create a gliding or sliding effect, which can provide a deep tissue massage-like sensation and help with myofascial release.

We are an interdisciplinary team who work in collaboration with on another, ensuring that you receive the best treatments for your personalized case.

 Cupping Therapy FAQs

  • Cupping therapy is generally not painful, but it can cause temporary discomfort or a pulling sensation as the cups create suction on the skin. The intensity of the suction can be adjusted based on individual comfort levels and treatment goals. Some people may experience temporary marks or discoloration on the skin after cupping, which typically resolves within a few days.

  • Cupping therapy is commonly used to address muscle pain, tension, and soreness. It is often sought for the relief of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and sports injuries. Additionally, cupping therapy is believed to help with promoting relaxation and improving circulation. It is essential to consult with your practitioner to determine if cupping is suitable for your specific condition.

  • Cupping therapy is generally safe when performed by a trained practitioner. However, it may cause temporary skin discoloration, bruising, or mild soreness at the cupping sites. These effects are typically harmless and fade over time. It's important to ensure that the cups are not left in one area for an extended period to avoid potential complications. Individuals with certain health conditions, such as bleeding disorders or skin conditions, should consult with their healthcare provider before undergoing cupping therapy.
